What a C-36 plumbing license covers in California
This directory lists businesses that hold the C-36 Plumbing Contractor classification from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Here is what the CSLB says the classification covers, in plain terms.
The CSLB definition
A plumbing contractor provides a way to supply safe water in enough volume and at a suitable temperature, and the proper disposal of fluid waste from the premises, in all structures and fixed works. The classification includes, but is not limited to:
- Complete removal of waste from the premises, or building and connecting on-site waste disposal systems.
- Piping, storage tanks and venting for a safe supply of gases and liquids, including vacuum, compressed air and medical, dental, commercial and industrial gases.
- All gas appliances, flues and gas connections for all systems, including suspended space heating units. Forced warm air units are not included.
- Water and gas piping from the property owner's side of the utility meter to the structure or fixed works.
- Installing any type of equipment to heat water or fluids to a suitable temperature, including solar equipment for that purpose.
- Maintenance and replacement of all of the above, and of health and safety devices such as gas earthquake valves, gas control valves, back flow preventers, water conditioning equipment and regulating valves.
What it means for you
- Water heater installation is inside the C-36 classification. See water heater installation in California.
- Forced warm air heating is outside it, according to the CSLB definition.
- A business can hold several classifications. Being on this directory means the license includes C-36, not that plumbing is the only thing the business does.
